And it's the right time of year. Was pegged to help build these OOH visuals for Samsung's Holiday campaign last year and one of the things I love doing is banging against the limits of Photoshop's canvas size. Built, rendered and composited these while traveling in snow covered British Columbia, which was perfectly inspirational with the help of a local California team to do the onsite heavy lifting of modeling, rendering and logistics. This one went to the 837 store in New York but the 30K OOH master really shined for this store wrap, even just for a week at the new Samsung Retail store that opened just in time for Christmas at the Stanford Shopping mall.

Thank you Meng, Alvin & Patrick for entrusting me with this project. With a commercial, of course. Just off the Kinestral industrial where Michael Wilde hired me, I turned the tables on him and hired him for the VO and music on this. No need to "pick two and call me in the morning". This one was fast, cheap AND good enough to show off. And one of those "if you do this now, you'll get the commercial later." Hahaha. I've heard and fell for that one before. But it's all good, Mike. Sometimes, if not most of the time, things are out of our hands. The most important thing to me has always been traction, and that the work works.

Raygun Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02320348328840584329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8151013766544574513.post-34624581306809423472020-11-10T00:15:00.005-08:002020-11-10T00:41:01.783-08:00JUST GOT PAID TODAY
Got me a pocket for of change. It's been a while, but a payment here and there trickled in for this industrial, finished some time back. Thanks, Michael Wilde for this fun project and thank you Kinestral for coming through after all. And thank you John Godbee for your good Cinema 4D work to support this.

A combo of Cinema, Keyshot and AfterEffects motion for this Michael Wilde concept, music, VO and final cut.

Raygun Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02320348328840584329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8151013766544574513.post-19650340144105905022019-10-04T14:46:00.008-07:002020-11-10T01:00:18.540-08:00NEW WORKIt's been a while since I posted anything here, as I have been busy learning to draw, riding my motorcycle and finding a new woman to call my own. But without further ado, here's some of the latest...
A loop for the new Samsung Retail Store that opened recently in Southern California. A gig for Michael Fisher of MYKNYC in New York City and Tom Stempfley of Samsung Electronics in Dallas, Texas. And here's a look a how it was used along with the way pointer motion loop we did as well (thanks, John!) for the new two-story Samsung Retail Store...

Last but certainly not least, I reconnected with Michael Wilde, one of the greatest art directors and craziest and most beautiful minds I've worked with. He was one of the first to entrust me with his ideas back in 2006 with the Ghirardelli pitch. Bite it before it bites you. Know what I mean?
Raygun Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02320348328840584329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8151013766544574513.post-5014985230375631792018-03-05T21:27:00.001-08:002018-03-05T21:27:38.455-08:00FOUND ARTISTS BOOKNice surprise in the mail today. With most of the studio work these days being confidential and/or architectural in nature, I honestly wasn't sure we'd have enough top-grade material to be selected for a third time in a row. But thanks to Trevor Oldershaw and Ronny Northrop at Y&R San Francisco, who gave us a shot to go wild at creating these ass-kicking nanobots critters, we made the cut. And speaking of "Thanks To"... a shout-out to all the amazing artists that partook in these is in order too. John Godbee, Devin Nickoloff and Ben Guestella contributed their 3D modeling, texturing, and lighting chops to create these the cool blue meanies now featured in the Fantasy World of Luerzer's Archives unique global CGI compendium. Congratulations and thanks to all of you!
I have a feeling that's true. But before we get too far into new things, kicking off this new year is some recognition for work in the last. For one, a job we collaborated on with photographer Robert Schlatter under the creative direction of Dan Chau, a hero shot for Pepsi's Aquafina Sparkling. Not only was it liked well enough to be the advertising key image, but chosen as the hero for all the packaging. And to top it off... made an appearance in the Creativity Awards Show garnering an award for the Pepsi's in house design and innovation team.
Of course. Just the regular, not the Pro. It goes better with the original one. For those who know what I am talking about, this was a huge Deja Vu! And no, I don't think it's expensive at all. I think it's a steal actually, knowing what goes into making one of these. Inks from Epple (which is Swabian for 'Apple'), 8-color separations and paper from Scheufelen in the Black Forest. Which made me remember that as a typographer's apprentice we made a field trip to the Scheufelen paper factory. I have this image burned into my mind of staring into a million gallon steel tank with a knife blade at the bottom the size of a DC3 prop. And the pulp and water shooting in like all hell broke lose. I asked if anyone had ever fallen into it and they said, "unfortunately... yes..." and explained that the guy became part of the paper, because the paper machine you can never shut down. I think even Jony is not that close to his work. Anyhow, I thumbed through it at the Apple Store, and I think it's exquisite. A really beautiful tribute to the work and Steve Jobs.
I can't get myself to touch that dayglow orange dot and rip the seal... I think I want to keep it in it's box, figure a true collector's item it won't be, if I take it out of the box and rob the future owner of the whole Apple unboxing experience... luckily there is a walkthrough on YouTube (in 4K!) that helps me scratch the itch...
The only disappointment? Although "Designed in California" was probably designed in California, it wasn't printed here or even in Germany. It was printed in China. Maybe I'll open that seal after all. Pleased to say that for the third year in a row, one of our submissions was selected for publication (not spoiling by saying which) and the book will be out in late 2016, early 2017. Meanwhile here's a look at the second issue, which Luerzer now put online and in which our Egyptitan Jewelry Python made an appearance.
Could it all be Carlos Castaneda's fault? Anyways, this piece done entirely in CG really strikes a chord with me, but I am sure even those who would never stop and step out of their cars between Barstow and Las Vegas or ever eat anything Don Juan has to offer, will find this amazing and beautiful:
What I didn't realize until now is that Mandelbrot was the name of a French mathematician named Benoit who came from France to IBM in America in the 70s and no one really knew about Fractals or understood them at the time. For some reason I always assumed fractals were DaVinci type math and it's amazing that the Mandelbrot Set was a creation of the 80s, a child of the computer revolution really. And even though fractal images have trended out just like Kai's PowerTools... the fractal designs and Kai's ideas are used everywhere now... including both the OS and the antenna of your latest iPhone. Talk about the intersection of Art and Math... and Life itself! But watch for yourself:
But it's rare to see the whole town plastered with it for a few days. Such was the case let week when vmworld 2014 took place in San Francisco's Moscone Center. The theme for this year's event: No Limits. It's vmaware, so virtual machines aren't far from the idea of breaking through walls, breaking through earthly boundaries or limits of the imagination and into space. The brainchild of Audrey Merritt, Thomas Whalen and the creatives at WHM Creative in San Francisco, we were entrusted with creating and rendering the final giga OOH imagery after having been a part of the early pitching and concepting...
To do this in earnest then, I got deep into dynamics, somewhat new territory for me, to blow up some walls.

Dynamics are an easy way to overwhelm your machines very quickly when going high-res. For some time I wasn't sure whether we made a mistake going the CGI route, as what passes as photorealistic in a fast action motion scene, does not hold up for a 12 foot banner, especially when you can walk up right up to.

It's been five years, so it's about time. No lie, Final Cut cuts through HD footage like it's motor oil and everything is happening in real time, dialing in the audio and lining it up with just the right cut or trying out all kinds of different ways of cutting is no longer tedious, but actually... fun. Check out the final cut on vimeo or just download the high-res by clicking on the image below:

Or even a cylinder. Open on both ends, it's a Tube. With a furnace inside and spinnning blades at the end. Just like a jet engine. To keep your coffee warm. My only peeve... It doesn't look anything like the renderings on Apple's site. It's neither matte with a shiny edge or black. It takes on whatever color your lighting is in the room and reminds me of a lipstick case or something from the men's hair dye color palette. Why not leave it at polished aluminum? Bet you it would develop a nice patina over time. Like an American Air Force bomber. Oh, well. Hidden not within a jungle or a test tube, but within terabytes of big sequence and genome data. Finding the answer to this question was the essence of this recent assignment. A continuation of Big Data themes that seems to have been developing here at the Atelier. It had us venture deeper into the fairly new world of generative art, a trend that's been developing in parallel with the ever increasing power of the Intel chips and multiplying complexity and interconnectivity of all digital systems and our world itself. What I liked about it too, was that it called for the Image Design aspect of our offerings and exploring new CGI tools. Here's a look at some designs then...
H.R. GIGERH.R. Giger has passed away. One of my favorite artists and artist heroes. Quite possibly the greatest artist of our time. Maybe not with the art elite, but for all who art makes a difference and give shape, a visual of what so many can feel, but not articulate until an artist puts it in front of them. "Hans Ruedi" Giger—right up there with Helnwein and Sorayama—all of whom I got introduced to via Rock'n'Roll record covers. In his case it was Emerson Lake & Palmer's Brain Salad Surgery and of course I had my mind blown by the amazing Alien in the late 70s. I was just looking on the web to find the best version of this album cover image to add to my iconic images folder I've started when I came across the news… I couldn't believe this just happened right now. It's really sad. But with his art being all about death, poison, pain and skeletal remains, I guess you could say what they said about Alice Cooper… getting quite old for a guy who gets executed every night…

Here are some of my all time favorites… Weird, I just downloaded the iTunes version of this LP last week.
